Deliciouslyorkshire names Acorn Best Wholesaler

Wholesale is at the heart of our business and so we were over to moo-n to win Best Wholesaler at the recent Deliciouslyorkshire Taste Awards.

The awards, which are now in their 18th year, celebrate the best of Yorkshire food and drink, and we’re delighted to be in such illustrious company.

We’re particularly proud to have been recognised for the growth of our wholesale business, which has developed over the past three years as we focus on building relationships with a wider range of commercial customers, without compromising our values.

The judges highlighted our commitment to the environment and our animals, saying: “With a key focus on improving sustainability within the business as well as maintaining the highest standards of welfare, Acorn Dairy have proven themselves to be agile, flexible and forward thinking.”

These lovely words perfectly sum up the Acorn way: building a sustainable business while staying true to our vision.

Cow welfare remains our top priority – after all, healthy cows mean great-tasting milk – and to continue to grow our wholesale business while maintaining a happy herd is of utmost importance to the whole team.

To this end, we focus on a simple philosophy: prevention is better than cure.

That means all the animals have more space in their housing during the winter and are allowed to graze outside naturally in the warmer months. All our youngsters are raised to stay in our herd or for the local beef market, and all receive high levels of human attention. This has led to fewer health problems among the herd.

The Deliciouslyorkshire team also highlighted our commitment to sustainability across the farm, which is another of our key values; so much so that, in 2021, we were honoured to receive a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development.

The award was based on all the environmentally-friendly practices we employ across the farm, from sourcing energy from our own on-site wind turbine, bottling all milk in our own plant (which reduces unnecessary food miles) and our use of glass bottles, which cuts 425kg per week of plastic from the local food chain.

We do none of the above for accolades; we do it because it’s the right thing to do.

And so, when we are recognised not only for our commitment to animal welfare, but also for the product and service we offer as wholesalers, it’s the icing on the cake. It also serves as testament to all of our wonderful staff, as well as the customers, both wholesale and doorstep, who continue to support us.

In fact, two companies that we supply were also winners on the night. Burtree Puddings won Best Bakery Product for its Golden Syrup Pudding with Sticky Syrup Sauce, as well as Best Ice Cream/Dairy for its Lemon Posset – both of which use Acorn Dairy Cream. Meanwhile, Minskip Farm Shop, near Boroughbridge, which is a stockist of our milk, won the Retail Award – congratulations to both of them too!
