Celebrating Hybrid Vigour- April 2025
The 27th of last month was a great day. A record number came to enjoy spring turnout. If you couldn’t join us, a short film from the morning is on our facebook page.Time has passed quickly and it is already feels ‘the norm’ to see the girls in the fields and watch them gently trouping to and from the milking parlour. We are used to it, but we forget our herd looks a motley crew. Black, brown, white, grey, roan, speckled, spotty and patchy are all represented. A melé of cross breeds, originating from the non organic, all black and white Holstein, big milk volume, herd we had in the 1990s, before we chose an organic life for the farm.
We caught up with Mystic on a mid day check round. Her geneolgy contains Holstein (Dutch,) Danish Red & Fleckvieh (Austrian/ German.) With her ‘war paint’ blaze over one eye, she has a look of her own. Mystic is pretty much perfection for us in terms of size, ease of calving, health & milk quality. An individual bull will be chosen to complement her physiology in the next generation & give ease of calving. (We have an expansive & impressive range of bull semen. Each bull has his particular merits! School groups & nervous teachers, always enjoy a healthy conversation around this topic.)All have mixed breed lineage, giving better disease resistance, longevity & high quality milk from our organic & predominantly home grown grass/ clover forage. We feel we strike the right balance for the land we are responsible for, the individual cows & customers…as long as you continue to value the same things we do & are willing to pay a little more to cover our higher organic standards.
